The XM Radio Prowlers Hockey club scored 3 goals
within in a 1:07 to comeback from a 2 goal deficit
and beat Satan 5-4 Monday night at 8 Rinks. After
tying the game in the last minute, Pete Koulouris
scored with 2.2 seconds left on the clock. A goal
that might have been his last as a Prowler.
Coming off a long 3 week layoff (4 weeks for some), the Prowlers had a sloppy first period, but had some jump. They gave up two goals in the first, but Pat Dogherty kept XM close, scoring on the powerplay at 9:21 of the first.
The Prowlers had a much better second, and carried the majority of the play. Brendan Wilson managed to tie the game midway through, picking up a Dave Parrot rebound off the post before being hammered in to the boards.
Satan struck early in the 3rd, scoring at the 9:16 mark and then taking a two goal lead with just over 3 minutes left.
The nail seemed to be in the coffin, but then Satan took 3 penalties to end the game, giving the Prowlers a 5 on 3 powerplay. After gaining control in Satan's end, XM made it a 6 on 3, pulling goalie Mike Howie for the extra attacker.
Outnumbering Satan 2-1 with men on the ice, Brendan Wilson scored his second of the game with 1:07 left to bring the Prowlers within one and since they scored with 2:15 left in the double minor of the first penalty, the Prowlers still had a 5 on 3.
With Howie pulled once again, the Prowlers scrambled off an offensive zone faceoff, when Daryl Goeson came from across the ice to grab the loose puck, proceed to skate around the net and found room short-side to tie the game at 4 with 27 seconds left.
The Prowlers were content with taking the game into overtime, but Satan wanted to end the game in regulation.
With a Satan player floating at the Prowler's blueline awaiting a breakaway pass and the Prowlers still on the powerplay, Dan Marcheen made a great play on the side boards in Satan's end to keep the puck in, allowing Koulouris to grab the puck, take it to the net and slide a backhand between the goalie's pads for the game winner with only 2.2 seconds left.
The comeback can only be described as Epic. Scoring 3 goals in the last minute to win a crucial division game left everyone ecstatic. No one more that Koulouris, who announced after the game that he is leaving the team for Greece, accepting an invitation to tryout for the Greek National Men's Hockey team.
More details will be available within the coming days on prowlershockey.ca regarding Pete's departure and amazing opportunity.
Note: The score keeper must have been on crack, as the official stats show a 5-3 Prowlers victory and has numerous scoring errors.
