Short Bench Delivers Huge Results

The XM Radio Prowlers finished 2008 with a bang, defeating the Goodfellas 4-2 in a Saturday afternoon game at Burnaby 8 Rinks. Pat Dogherty scored 2 including a short-handed goal while Trevor McLean and Dave Parrott provided secondary scoring.

The Prowlers had a short bench with only 9 skaters. But fueled by Hype Energy before the game gave them that extra jump they needed.

With the absence of leading scorers Pete Koulouris and Brendan Wilson, Pat Dogherty stepped up to the challenge, opening the scoring with an unassisted goal at 9:10 of the first. He then finished off a tic-tac-toe play with Dave Parrott, short-handed a few minutes later.

The short-handed marker was the first of the season for the Prowlers. However they didn't escape the first unscathed, as the Goodfellas scored on the powerplay with 1.8 seconds left in the period.

The monster of the game arguably could have been Trevor McLean. Scoring his 4th of the season, and what proved to be the winning goal, to give XM a 3-1 lead and then showing some great patience in the 3rd. With the man advantage, Trevor made a couple turns deep in the corner and then fed a backhand pass to a waiting Dave Parrott in front who made no mistake and buried it for his second point of the game.

Goalie Mike Howie was quiet most of the night, stopping 24 of a generous 26 shots for his 8th win of the season.

"It was a real character win" said Jeff Duncan. "It proves we are deeper than just one or two guys. Every one on this team can step up when called upon and we proved it tonight. I think this team has the ability to go on a good run."

Having won 4 of their last 5, the Prowlers will have to wait until 2009 to continue their hot play as the 2nd half of the season has not been released as of yet.

For now the team will enjoy a well deserved break over Christmas and hit the ice early in the new year.
